 What is an RSS?

While RSS can stand for many things, the RSS that we are talking about and is so widely used today on the web  is a file format and the initial stand for "Real Simple Syndication".  Wikipedia explains RSS in the following way:

"RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts.

Users of RSS content use programs called feed 'readers' or 'aggregators': the user 'subscribes' to a feed by supplying to their reader a link to the feed; the reader can then check the user's subscribed feeds to see if any of those feeds have new content since the last time it checked, and if so, retrieve that content and present it to the user."

Simply put, if you want to be notified, or include some type of content that is being updated and is being offered automatically on your website, you can use this format to get the most recent information from the feed.

This can help sites keep fresh content on their website with minimal effort, because the content creators are updating the content, so the site visitor doesn't have to. RSS is usually delivered in XML format and it is called an RSS Feed. The file extension can be .xml or .rss .

New web browsers such as the Internet Explorer 7 have an RSS reader built in. This means the IE 7 can display the RSS content in a neat page in tabular format that is easy to read. For the other browsers, you will need a news reader to format the content into a readable format. After all, RSS was meant to be for the transmission of information in bulk.
