DOMAINS

Your domain name, sorted out

Your domain name is the first thing customers see and often the last thing they forget. Here’s what to know before you register, transfer, or manage one.

📝

How to choose a domain name

Keep it short, easy to say out loud, and easy to spell after hearing it once. Avoid hyphens and numbers where you can — they’re easy to mistype and easy to forget. If your exact business name isn’t available, a short, memorable variation usually beats a long, awkward exact match.

⚖️

.com vs. everything else

.com is still the extension most people assume by default, which makes it the safest choice for a primary business site. Newer extensions like .shop, .studio, or .co can work well for a specific project or a creative brand, but if the .com version of your name is available, it’s usually worth having.

🔄

Moving a domain you already own

A domain transfer moves your existing domain to a new registrar without taking your site offline. It typically takes 5–7 days, requires the domain to be unlocked at your current registrar, and needs an authorization code (EPP code) from wherever it’s currently registered.

📂

Managing a lot of domains

If you or your agency manage a portfolio of domains — client sites, brand-protection registrations, or several projects at once — bulk tools let you register, renew, or transfer many domains in one pass instead of one at a time.
